Parenting nowadays has become a big challenge for which we sometimes scratch our head to know whether the way I am dealing with my child is acceptable or it needs to be changed. We all know what we are doing is not always correct. There is always a scope of improvement in every scenario.
Let's have an inner insight today into the parenting style we opted and jolt down the areas that require rethinking. So, we can change ourselves for the better upbringing of our children.
1) Disciplinarian- This is said to be the parenting style that our parents opted for. Strictness in every manner. Where to go, What to Wear, When to go, What to study, Which friends should we deal with, When to sleep, When to wake up. Almost everything was decided by our parents. There was very limited flexibility in the hands of children. The punishment was not a big deal. All of us would sense their respective childhood memories attached to this style. There was nothing wrong with it, only more of expectations, then more of frustrations. Kids here may become liars, aggressive, and full of negative feelings towards parents. So probably this style will not survive in today's era. If you are the authoritative parent, think again and change a bit.
2) Authoritative - This parenting style is altogether opposite of Authoritarian. Here, parents act like friends, with not much expectation. This all sounds good but it leads to bossy kids. Researchers have found that authoritative parents are most likely to create responsible adults who feel comfortable expressing their opinions. They share their feelings with their parents and are generally more successful.
3) Permissive- The parents who think their child will learn best with little interference come in this category. If you always try to follow the rule that they are the kids, they have a separate identity, we need not interrupt in their way of life. These types of parents usually make rules but do not reinforce them to the kids.
Kids who grow up with permissive parents are more likely to struggle academically. They may exhibit more behavioral problems as they don't appreciate authority and rules. They often have low self-esteem and a confused state of mind. So, this type of parenting is not considered to be a good choice.
4) Uninvolved- Uninvolved parents tend to have little knowledge of what their children are doing. Generally, they don't have much time to spend with their kids. They are usually busy in their routine and don't care much about the child's life minor happenings. This lack of involvement may sometimes be unintentional, probably, state of parents' mind, medical issue, family situations all matters in deciding it.
Children with uninvolved parents are likely to struggle with self-esteem issues. They tend to perform poorly in school. They also exhibit frequent behavior problems. So this parenting style can be your helplessness but certainly not a choice.
Now, lets all introspect ourselves, Which parenting style fits us the most and which rectifications are required from our side to rank our children high in happiness scale.
